Plaid America is a house of benevolent cannabis brands born in California. Substance and Skewville are part of the Plaid America umbrella. The premium cannabis brands specialize in rolling pre-rolls with the purpose of donating a portion of sales to prison reform nonprofits. The current beneficiaries for Subtance are Impact/Justice while Skewville’s pre-roll sales benefit a nonprofit called the Justice Arts Coalition. The second brand born into the Plaid America family, Skewville, is currently available in two distinct varieties: YELLOW and BLUE. What makes Skewville pre-roll packs unique? BLUE stands for Blueberry Muffin from Sunrise Mountain Farm, Humboldt, another legacy regenerative family-owned farm boasting organic living soil in Humboldt. And the third offering that will be coming soon, Skewville RED is a collaboration with the Los Angeles-based brand and award-winning cultivator THC-Design.
Skewville was born at the intersection of art & cannabis advocacy, founded by Adam Torio in 1996. Substance is the pre-roll brand helping end mass incarceration, while Skewville’s product offerings are designed to propel racial equity through investment in art programs in prisons. Sharoz Makarechi, CEO and co-founder of Plaid America, is the creative mind behind Substance and collaborated with Torio on Skewville. She met Torio at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Torio had the distinct honor of being the first to introduce Makarechi to cannabis in a meaningful way; he got her high and the rest is this story.
